Angelfish, Jellyfish, & Clownfish

The stunning and colorful adult Blue-girdled Angelfish (Pomacanthus narvarchus) photographed in Walindi, Papua New Guinea inhabits areas rich in coral growth along protected outer reef slopes and clear lagoons and channels. Usually living at depths at 8 to 10 feet, they are solitary and shy and difficult to approach closely.

The Crown Jellyfish (Netrostoma setouchianum) was photographed off the north side of Big Brothers Island in the Red Sea. Strong upwelling currents were sweeping these jellyfish along the outer reef slopes and with just moments of air and three frames left on the roll I quickly shot hoping to accurately capture the wonderful scene in front of me.

The Percula Clownfish, (Amphiprion percula) sound asleep in its host anemone (Stichodactyla mertensii) was photographed during a late night dive in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea. All clownfish or anemonefish live in close association with anemones and mature as males, with all females being sex-reversed males. The very unusual purple variation of this Giant Anemone is caused by a simbiotic algae or Zooxanthellae that lives within the animal. This is one of my favorite Triptych combinations.
