Coral Grouper, Butterflyfish & Clownfish

This brilliant red Coral Grouper, (Cephalopholis miniata), and the vibrant yellow Blue-cheek Butterflyfish, (Chaetodon semilarvatus), were photographed at Ras Mohammed, Sharm-el-Sheik, Egypt. These are some of the more conspicuous of coral reef fishes and can be easily approached in this area.

The Percula Clownfish, (Amphiprion percula), sleeping among the tentacles of this unusual purple color phase of Anemone,(Stichodactyla mertensii) was photographed on my last night dive while in Papua New Guinea. I was able to approach within one inch of this fish.

In the wild, all clownfish or Anemonefish live in close association with anemones. Anemonefish mature as males with all females being sex-reversed males, sex and growth is determined by the presence of a dominant female. In the absence of a female, the largest male will change into a female and the largest juvenile will rapidly mature into a male.
