Hogfish
These hogfish, (Lachnolaimus maximus), are members of the Wrasse family, and were photographed on the Breakers Reef off Palm Beach, Florida. Juveniles vary from pearl white to a mottled or reddish brown color. Large adults develop a pronounced snout or forehead that curves steeply above the mouth. Coloration is variable with males tending to be more intense in color than females. The first three spines of the dorsal fin are greatly elongated and thickened.
Hogfish feed mainly on mollusks, crabs, sea urchins and other invertebrates, and are generally unafraid of divers in non-spearfishing areas. They are most commonly found on open bottoms, and occasionally on reefs.
