Moorish Idol & Angelfish
These photographs of the Moorish Idol, (Zanclus cornutus), the juvenile Emperor Angelfish, (Pomacanthus imperator) and Eel, and the majestic Blue-girdled Angelfish, (Pomacanthus narvarchus), were taken in Papua New Guinea.
These are some of the more conspicuous of coral reef fishes and feed mainly on zooplankton, algae, sponges, and to a lesser extent on soft-bodied invertebrates.
These fish were quite difficult for me to approach, and many hours were spent trying to get close enough to photograph them. I did not notice the moray eel peeking his head out of a hole just in front of the juvenile Emperor Angelfish until I was later viewing my developed slide on the light table. The Angelfish was swimming very rapidly from left to right and I often wonder what the odds were of snapping the shutter just as one was in front of the other and both being in focus with a very narrow depth of field.
