Orca Whales

This sequence of photos of one female Orca (Orcinus orca) breaching over another female Orca was photographed off of Orcus Island in the San Juan Islands in late July. There are three seperate pods of resident Orcas living in this area; the L, K, and the J pods that make up over a hundred individuals. These Orcas, normally feeding on the schools of Salmon and other fishes found in large concentrations in this area can sometimes be seen feeding on other marine mammals.

On this morning I was lucky enough to observe all three pods interacting together with many animals breaching over or alongside each other.

This was one of the most difficult sequences of photos for me to capture as I never knew where or when these whales would breach.
