Percula Clownfish Triptych

These Percula Clownfish, (Amphiprion percula), living among the Giant Anemone (Stichodactyla mertensii) were photographed on a shallow reef in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea. These colorful clownfish live in a symbiotic relationship with Anemones.

Anemones like corals are colored by symbiotic algae or zooxanthellae that live within the animal. The deep purple is a very unusual color variation for this species of Anemone.

During the two months that I was diving and photographing in Milne Bay, I saw only one with this intense purple color. Three days and numerous rolls later, I was rewarded with these vibrant images.

In the wild, all clownfish or Anemonefish live in close association with anemones. Anemonefish mature as males with all females being sex-reversed males, sex and growth is determined by the presence of a dominant female. In the absence of a female, the largest male will change into a female and the largest juvenile will rapidly mature into a male.
