Playful Spotted Dolphin

These playful Spotted Dolphin, (Stenella frontalis), some with newborn calves, were photographed in the northwestern part of the Bahama Banks, approximately 40 miles from Grand Bahama Island. On these sandy banks there are large numbers of Spotted Dolphin that feed on the Ballyhoo, Razorfish, and other reef fish found here.

It is quite common for these dolphin to approach the boat and begin jumping and frolicking off the bow, all the while enticing one to get into the water and experience a truly wondrous and friendly encounter.

These totally wild dolphin are used to people in their environment and would sometimes swim rapid circles around me just within inches of my face mask, all the while twisting and turning and seemingly enjoying the encounter as much as I. At times these moments were so enjoyable I could hardly remember to take their picture.
