Spinecheek, Orangefin & Percula Clownfish

These photos represent three different species of Clownfish in three different species of Anemones. The Spinecheek Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus) is living among the very unusual bleached white tentacles of the Bulb Tentacle Sea Anemone, (Entacmaea quadricolor), and was photographed in Papua New Guinea.

The Orangefin Anemonefish in the center, photographed at Ras Mohammad Marine Park in the Red Sea is living in association with the Gigantic Sea Anemone (Stichodactyla gigantea).

The Percula Clownfish, (Amphiprion percula), sleeping among the tentacles of this unusual purple color phase of Anemone,(Stichodactyla mertensii) was photographed on my last night dive while in Papua New Guinea. I was able to approach within one inch of this fish.

In the wild, all clownfish or Anemonefish live in close association with anemones. Anemonefish mature as males with all females being sex-reversed males, sex and growth is determined by the presence of a dominant female. In the absence of a female, the largest male will change into a female and the largest juvenile will rapidly mature into a male.
