The zebra longwing butterfly is the official state butterfly of Florida. It is also my favorite species of butterfly to see flitting about the yard. This photo was taken in our backyard while the butterfly was drinking nectar out of the coral plant flower. I love the reds, greens, pinks and blues of the background as well. If you want to get some butterflies visiting in your yard, plant coral plants, milkweed, scarlet firebush and some buddleia. There are many other plants that work, but these work best in our yard. Plant some native wild passion vines or corky stemmed passion vines in a shady area for the larval stages of zebra longwings or julia butterfly caterpillars. They work awesome for us!
