I photographed this beautiful array of sea fans along a deep drop off just offshore of the remote South Pacific island of Tonga. Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of more than 170 South Pacific islands, many uninhabited, most lined in white beaches and coral reefs and covered with tropical rainforest. It is surrounded by Fiji to the northwest, Samoa to the northeast, Niue to the east, Kermadec to the southwest, and New Caledonia and Vanatua to the farther west. Right in the middle of Paradise so to say! Why did I ever leave? What an incredibly beautiful place to visit and dive! In all my years of diving and traveling, I have never experienced such clarity of water anywhere else. There is no close second for me. Early each morning just as the sun was rising, I would begin my dive along the edge of the deep drop off where fields of huge sea fans, many well over ten feet in height, would go on as if forever! As the sun would rise over the horizon, the rays of light would bounce along the surface and filter down through the water and the sea fans would be back lit against the most beautifully colored, crystal clear, sapphire blue water you could possibly imagine. What a site to behold! The peaceful nature of this image with these magnificent sea fans reaching up to the sky is one I truly love. I know you will too.
